The International Phonetic Association (IPA) is the most significant and
longest standing organization dedicated to the study of phonetics. The association was established in 1886 in
Paris and 2013 is the 125th anniversary of the first publication of
the International Phonetic Alphabet.
The charter of the IPA is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and practical
application of that science.
The official International Phonetic Alphabet, and its organization in a
chart, is maintained by the IPA.
